4. Januar 1917

In the late afternoon, I’m going with a comrade on cable patrol – both cables to the 31st regiment are destroyed. One we patched again correctly, the other is downright blocked. We work in heavy enemy grenade fire. Twice we have had to pull back, but always go again to the front. We constantly throw ourselves into shell holes. All over the damned beasts crackle and detonate. A shiver whizzes by with apish speed close over our backs. We lie flat on our stomachs. We hurry back after that double time.

The New Year has begun; but the prospects of a hopeful future are pretty bleak. Who knows how long we will have to hold out here! We are up to our ears in filth. That’s a union!
We have the best mood in the bunker. The whole time we still have not grown. Where would we have had the opportunity to? Similarly we have so far not been able to even take off our clothes at night.

It is New Year’s. We do not have anything else to drink other than dirty grenade water. Therefore a celebration is unthinkable. The enemy artillery and ours exchange mutual New Year’s greetings in timely fashion.

Unsere Artillerie antwortete heftig. Nach einer halben Stunde wurde es ruhiger. Man hatte das neue Jahr offenbar genügend begrüßt.

The New Year is celebrated in rather unusual fashion. At midnight a right old artillery fire started up from the other side. Our artillery gave as good as they got. After half an hour things quietened down again. Evidently the new year had been adequately rung in.

Our journey continued to the Ancre, a small tributary of the Somme, on the extreme right wing of the salent. Whereas the front had begun to stabilise in the rest of the Somme area by November, here things continued to simmer throughout November. On 13 November the English had achieved a rather significant success in taking Beaumont-Hamel, which could be expected to encourage them to take further steps to seize their next objective, the town of Bapaume. […] The move into our positions will remain forever in the memory of all the men of the 86th.

There was no footing on any of the approach routes, even the paved routes had been pulverised by artillery fire. The only route was the railway embankment. Even it presented considerable difficulties, as it had taken many hits, so that sleepers and rails were hanging in the air. In Miraumont, which was reduced to ruins, the Ancre had burst its banks and flowed copiously into a broad, partly forested flood plain of the Somme. Here we left the railway embankment. The way to Grandcourt led down a steep slope alongside the Ancre.

The approach route became increasingly difficult. The highway to Grandcourt was covered by a fine, foot-deep layer of slush, beneath which the shell-holes were completely invisible. The leading companies had equipped themselves with long staffs and felt their way carefully forward, step by step. Many men who were not so equipped went into shell-holes waist- or chest-deep and would have drowned were it not for comrades who were willing to drag them out, often with black-humoured jokes. We heard that several orderlies and runners from the regiment that we relieved had drowned in the treacherous shell-holes. We waded on through the completely shot-up Grandcourt to the position, which was on the heights above the town. The fusiliers had never seen such desolation. Far and wide around there was not a blade of grass, a tree, a bush: a desert of grey-brown mud extended before our eyes.

The ‘position’ was nothing worthy of the name. In places it was no more than a row of shell-holes connected by a ditch about three-quarters of a metre (two feet) deep. It was knee-deep in mud. Most of it was not even recognisable as a position any more. Sentries stood in shell-holes that had been tidied up to the extent possible. The barbed-wire defence was no more than one or two rows of concertina wire. Blown to pieces in many places, it was as good as useless. There were a few dugouts, old artillery positions. However they were not waterproof and were muddy. The men could only rest in them sitting [not lying] down. The lack of light made them particularly depressing. The fusiliers sat in the dark for days on end. This situation was only put right after insistent representations had been made by the regiment.

The position was in the shape of a rectangle around Grandcourt and was thus threatened from three sides. In the event of a simultaneous attack on both flanks, the narrow withdrawal route along the Ancre could easily be kept under fire and all possibility of retreat for the troops holding the Grandcourt box, as it was called, cut off. There were no communication trenches leading to the rear, and this led to the unusual arrangement of the ‘casualty collection break’. It lasted from 8 to10 am, and had presumably come about by tacit agreement. Both sides’ artillery ceased firing, and the wounded could be evacuated in the open, under cover of a red-cross flag, without coming under fire.

During Christmas we had to patch the lines more often in the daylight. We felt nothing from Christmas. We sit in the dark deep in the earth; cannot get a hold of any more candles. Because of the heavy shooting the provisions have stayed away for 4 days. We have even eaten cooked potato peels. Of course we have not received any mail. So none of us have received a Christmas greeting from our relatives. Therefore no one could conjure up any Christmas spirit either. Instead we have just worried about our boredom. On Christmas night I have to go looking for problems. It is always a particular joy to go take care of disruption problems during the night. One cannot even turn on a flashlight to orientate himself somewhat. The dark cable continually runs through your hand and you continually gain territory towards the front.
That went on until you suddenly held the end of the cable in your hand. At this point one of the two searchers keeps going until the other has discovered the other end of the line in the dark area through arduous fumbling about in the slushy mud. An often very cumbersome undertaking! Sometimes 20 m and more are shot out of the line. Now it is being patched – in doing so we are crouched for the most part in a dark shell hole. Only when it is clear that the phones we brought along are activated can one think about going back. How often do we have to fix breakages 2 or 3 more times in the same line though! But what is really annoying is when the problem lies close behind the front trenches! How easy would it be for the infantry in their position to fix this problem!
