The war
1939-1940.

We thought our hour had come
And we already heard the shrieking of the french artillery shells
this is how the suitcase industry came to flourish.
The railway was busy like never before
hence they called us "suitcase heroes",
although the superiors did not miss either.

Der Krieg

 Adolf Hitlers Ernennung zum deutschen Reichskanzler am 30. Januar 1933 markiert den Anfang vom Ende einer fünfzehn Jahre währenden weitgehend friedlichen Periode in Europa. Mit dem "Anschluss" Österreichs und des Sudetenlandes sowie der Annexion der "Rest-Tschechei" ist Hitlers Expansionsdrang nicht am Ende.

Der Überfall auf Polen zieht dessen Verbündete Frankreich und Großbritannien formell in den Krieg. Die Sowjetunion hatte sich mit Hitler arrangiert, Teile Polens, Finnlands und das Baltikum annektiert. Im Sommer 1940 ist Frankreich nach einem Blitzkrieg von der Wehrmacht besiegt und zweigeteilt; Belgien, Luxemburg und die Niederlande sind ebenso besetzt, wie Polen. Auch Dänemark und Norwegen stehen unter deutscher Kontrolle. Hitler triumphiert. Nur Großbritannien leistet ihm als einzige europäische Großmacht erfolgreich Widerstand.

Die Dokumentation zeigt den scheinbar unaufhaltsamen Vormarsch der Wehrmacht und eine bisher nicht gekannte Folge von Siegen auf dem europäischen Kontinent, die erst mit der Niederlage in der Luftschlacht um England gestoppt wurde.

Adolf Hitler's appointment as German Chancellor on 30th January 1933 marks the beginning of the end of a largely peaceful 15-year period in Europe. With the "Anschluss" of Austria and the Sudetenland as well as the annexation of the rest of Czechoslovakia Hitler's drive for expansion is not over.
The attack on Poland pulls its allies France and Great Britain formally into the war. The Soviet Union had arranged with Hitler the annexation of parts of Poland, of Finland and the Baltic. In the summer of 1940 France is conquered by the German army in a lightning war and divided in two; Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands are similarly occupied, as is Poland. Denmark and Norway are also under German control. Hitler is triumphant. Great Britain alone is the sole European great power to resist him successfully.
The documentary shows the apparently unstoppable advance of the German army and succession of victories never before seen on the European continent, which is not stopped until their defeat in the air battle for England (please, Great Britain!)

4 Uhr früh Abfahrt unseres Transportzuges über Hamburg, Rotenburg, Kirchwege, Diepholz, Osnabrück, Münster, Recklinghausen, Gelsenkirchen, bei Duisburg über den Rhein, Krefeld, Neuß nach Düren. Ankunft 9 Uhr abends. Sofortiges Entladen. Abmarsch von Düren gegen 2 Uhr nachts.
 

At 4a.m. our transport train sets off through Hamburg, Rotenburg, Kirchwege, Diepholz, Osnabrück, Münster, Recklinghausen, Gelsenkirchen,via Duisburg across the Rhine, Krefeld, Neuß to Düren. Arrive 9p.m. Immediate unloading. March off from Düren aroung 2a.m.
