The ‘casualty collection break’ (Sanitätspause) is quite interesting, I’d never heard of anything quite like it before now.
AntwortenLöschenMost readers have probably heard of the Christmas truces that occurred mainly in 1914, and became rarer in subsequent years as senior commanders were most anxious to stamp them out for fear that ‘fighting spirit’ would be undermined.
What is less commonly talked about is the ‘live and let live’ system, which was built on a tacit understanding between both sides and led to whole sectors gaining a reputation for being ‘quiet’. There’s an excellent book about this by Tony Ashworth entitled Trench Warfare 1914-1918 - The Live and Let Live System (Pan Books 1980-2000, ISBN 0-330-48068-5).
What’s interesting about the Sanitätspause is that it occurs daily at a fixed time in a sector which, for the rest of the day and night is far from quiet even over Christmas and the New Year, and that it is apparently respected by newcomer units too, as the regimental diarist is surmising that it ‘presumably’ (wohl) came about by tacit agreement, suggesting that it predated his unit‘s tour in this sector.
For anyone interested in knowing more about daily life in the trenches, there’s also an excellent Wikipedia article on Trench Warfare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trench_warfare
