11. Juni 1917

I had come off night duty in the morning and I am completely warn out and went to sleep. At 9 o'clock I am woken by my comrades, I must go immediately to Cambrai, as I am transferred to the station there. Hardly had I arisen, than I felt very bad. I was tormented by a violent bellyache and I vomit several times. I could not stand up and so I lie down again. Soon our orderly determines I have appendicitis.

I am driven immediately to the medical company 23, which is attached to the place. There the physician confirms appendicitis. In the afternoon, they pack me into an ambulance and drive me to Cambrai, where I am admitted in the field hospital 92. On the way I have the most violent pain. The alledged
appendicitis emerges as strangulated hernia, with the bowls already poking out. I must have a surgery immediately. I am tied onto the surgery table with a belt over the legs, another over my chest and a cloth over my eyes. Two attendants hold me down by the arms. The head physician and a special professor performed the operation. I have not been given chloroform during the operation. I am injected 12 times with a local anaesthetic but I get no relief from it and I scream in agony. The operation last over an hour and I feel every detail, I am glad when it is over and I am carried to bed.
