Waffenstillstand

Cease-fire with France

Hope gives happiness to man,
His joy returns where it began.
But if it takes him unawares, he
gets, to top it all, quite crazy

FRA IT

22. Juni 1940

At mid-day I go through the village in order to collect the personal details of the civilian population. Yet another special event from yesterday must be documented: out of the blue our regimental sergeant major has been ordered home. We know nothing of the details, but we have our own thoughts. We are all glad that he has gone. He was a menace for months. We will never forget that he constantly belittled the Great War veterans and insulted them.
