For weeks the press has seen what is to come
with gossipy enthusiastic tongue:
“A neutral Italy we’ve had for far too long
No longer do we want to be alone.
The empire is both strong and large enough
to be enraged at England’s so-called toughs”
Whoever doubted Rome’s great loyalty
should take a careful look and see:
the Axis is both strong and firm
and Rome’s neutrality was a most useful arm.

10. Juni 1940

Morgens fahren wir mit Lastautos über Brügge nach dem Nordseebad Wenduine. Hier nehmen wir ein erfrischendes Bad. Die Sicht ist schlecht, und wir können leider die vor der Küste liegenden Wracks nicht sehen. Im Ort reiht sich Hotel an Hotel, Pâtisserie an Pâtisserie. Die meisten Hotels sind geschlossen, ihre Inhaber geflohen. Mit einigen Hotelbesitzern unterhalte ich mich französisch. Einer von ihnen hat 3 Söhne beim Militär und hat seit 5 Wochen keinerlei Nachricht von ihnen. Ich speise schön du dabei sehr billig im „Hôtel des Boulevards“. Um 220 Uhr hören wir in einem Lokal die Sondermeldung, daß der Krieg in Norwegen vorbei und Narvik endgültig in deutscher Hand sei.
Wir fahren nach Berg-op-Zoom zurück. Abends um 8 Uhr hören wir beim Verpflegungsempfang die Nachricht, daß Italien England und Frankreich den Krieg erklärt hat. Darob große Begeisterung! Die belgischen Gefangenen (oder sind es nur die Flamen?) kehren seit gestern ununterbrochen in ihre Heimatorte zurück. Man hat sie entlassen und alle sind von Herzen froh. Man hört drastische Meinungsäußerungen über den Krieg, die Kriegshetzer und Kriegsschuldigen, die Kapitalisten und vor allem über die Herren Engländer. Ein ganz besonderer Punkt spielt in ihren Gespächen eine große Rolle.
 

In the morning we go by lorry through Bruges to the North Sea resort of Wenduine. Hear we have a refreshing swim. The visibility is poor, and unfortunately we can't see the wrecks lying off the coast. In the town there is hotel after hotel and cake-shop after cake-shop. Most hotels are closed and the proprietors have fled. I chat with a few hotel owners in French. One of them has 3 sons in the army and has had no news whatsoever of them for 5 weeks. I eat well and cheaply at that in the "Hotel des Boulevards". At 2.20 we hear in a bar the special announcement that the war in Norway is over and Narvik is finally in German hands.
We go back to Berg-op-Zoom.  At 8 in the evening as we are picking up provisions we hear the news that Italy has declared war on England and France. Much rejoicing! The Belgian prisoners (or is it just the Flemings?) have been returning to their home towns in a constant flow since yesterday. They have been released and all are absolutely delighted.You hear extreme expressions of opinion about the war, the warmongers and the war guilty, the capitalists and above all their English lordships. One particular point is of great importance in their talk.
