Mein Bild

At the post office, I recon the long distance phone lines in those villages our platoons are located. In the afternoon, I take the bike together with Butt to see the 4th and 2nd platoon. I am to deliver orders from the Captain.
First we head for Huppenbroich. Near Imgenbroich we meet Lieutenant Hansen and Sergeant Wilstermann. We proceed to Höfen via Monschau. There, we report to Lietenant Schröder. In the village, my bicyle has a flat tyre. After fixing the damage, we return to Monschau. Here, we have some coffee in the
Rur-Café (Breuer). Completely outworn we return to Kesternich in the evening.

  2. Now this is an interesting post. Not just for the content, but I think I see two characterisics of Dieter here:

    1. Dieter loves to be outside. He loves to tke the bike strolling around to visit the platoons. He writes a lot like this.
In fact, Dieter gave the same descriptions on the way back from the front 20 years ago, when the army got demobilized. He wrote a lot on how beautiful the area was they were marching through.

    2. Dieter writes down names. A lot of names. Why? It seems he does not want to forget who he met and what happened. Does he like the war?
So far, nothing like "oh my god, it's war again!" He does not complain about being drafted, although he knows exactly what being shot at means.

  3. Re your point 2, Thomas, I've just sent Sven a comment on one of the first 1939 posts about precisely this attitude, and how different it is from what appears to have been the common attitude of French WWI veterans who were "recalled to the colours" in 1939. It should appear on the blog when he clears it, so we might follow up this discussion when you've read it.
