Die Zuckerfabrik in Vis-en-Artois ist ebenfalls bei Ernst Jüngers "In Stahlgewittern" beschrieben:
09.12.1917
(S.247)
The sugar factory in Vis-en-Artois is also mentioned in Ernst Jünger´s "Storm of Steel":
09.12.1917 My shelter was dug back into to vertical wall of a gravel pit that gaped behind the line, and was shelled allmost every day. Behind it rose the blackened iron skeleton of a destroyed sugar factory...
..., because the enemy seemed to take the sugar factory for our headquarters, and expended most of their powder on that old iron shell.

Jünger's remarks say a lot. When I saw the photo, I thought "That's the sort of building that an army would regard as useful for billets", but by the time Jünger got there in 1917 it's been reduced to the cast-iron skeleton.
AntwortenLöschenJust the sort of feature that armies, speaking out of the other side of their mouths, tell their people to avoid because they are such obvious targets for enemy artillery.
