Morgens um 4 Uhr treffen wir in Wambréchies ein, einem kleinen Ort nördlich von Lille, der noch innerhalb des Festungsbereiches liegt. Wir werden zunächst in einer alten Fabrik untergebracht, beziehen aber am Tage ein anderes Quartier. Mit 3 Mann ziehen wir in eine kleine nette Bude. In der nächsten Nachbarschaft von mir wohnt ein kleines, intelligentes Mädel, Valentine Cousin, die es in der Erlernung der deutschen Sprache schon verhältnismäßig weit gebracht hat. Ihre Sprachkenntnisse hat sie sich durch die Benutzung von Lehrbüchern selbst erworben. Bislang habe ich noch keinen Franzosen und keine Französin kennengelernt, die die deutsche Sprache so gut beherrschten. Ich habe mich mit der kleinen Französin auf deutsch und auf französisch gut unterhalten.
4 'o clock in the morning we arrive at Wambréchies, a small village north of Lille, still inside the fortified area. Initially, we are being quartered in an old factory, but later that same day move to a different quarter. Being three, we move into a nice little hangout. In the neighborhood lives an intelligent little girl, Valentine Cousin, who made relatively good progress in learning the german language. She gained her knowlegde on her own by reading text books. So far I did not meet any french man or woman that spoke german so well. I did conversate well with her in german as well as in french.

Alle 4 del mattino arriviamo a Wambréchies, un piccolo villaggio a nord di Lille, ancora all'interno della zona fortificata. All'inizio ci sistemiamo in una vecchia fabbrica, ma, più tardi, nel giorno stesso ci spostiamo in una zona diversa. Essendo in tre, andiamo in un bel localino. Nelle vicinanze vive una ragazzina molto intelligente, Valentine Cousin, che ha fatto dei bei progressi nell'apprendere il tedesco. Ha imparato da sola leggendo libri. Non ho mai incontrato nessun uomo o danna francesi che parlassero il tedesco così bene. Ho conversato con lei sia in tedesco che in francese.
