Einer der letzten Opfer dieses Angriffstages war der tapfere Kommandeur der 18. Div., Generalleutnant von Blottnitz. Er fiel, als er von der Höhe des Steinbruchs den Angriff auf Templeux beobachten wollte, durch eine feindliche Granate. Mit ihm fiel ein Mann, der die besten altpreussischen Soldatentugenden in sich vereinigte. Niemals hatte er in diesem Feldzuge gezögert, wo es nötig war, sein Leben rücksichtslos einsetzte. Für ihn übernahm Freihr. von Massenbach, bisher Kommandeur der 18. F.U.Brig., das Kommando.

The quarry is going to play a special role on March 22nd 1918.......One of the last victims of this attack day was the gallant Commander of the 18th division, Lieutenant General von Blottnitz. He fell through an enemy grenade when he wanted to observe the attack on Templeux from the rim of the quarry. With him, a man fell, that united all the best old prussian soldier's virtues. Never in this campaign, he had hesitated to recklessly put his life at stake when ever necessary. He is succeeded by Freiherr von MAssenbach, until now commander of the 18th F.U. Brigade.

Egli cadde a causa di una ganata nemica mentre assisteva all'attacco di Templeux dal bordo della cava. Con lui abbiamo perso un uomo che aveva in sè tutte le migliori virtù del vecchio soldato Prussiano. Mai, durante questa campagna, egli aveva esitato a mettere in gioco la sua vita temerariamente. Gli successe Freiherr von Massenbach, fino ad oggi comandante della 18^ Brigata di Fanteria.
