Abmarsch von Douai über Déchy, Cantin, Bugnicourt, Aubigny-au Bac, Aubencheu-au Bac, Cambrai, Igniel nach Beauvois. In diesem auf einer Höhe gelegenen, ziemlich netten Dorf beziehen wir ein verhältnismäßig gutes Quartier, d.h. bei 3 alten Weibern. Ich muß immer den Dolmetscher machen.

We leave Douai and march via Déchy, Cantin, Bugnicourt, Aubigny-au Bac, Aubencheu-au Bac, Cambrai, Igniel to Beauvois. In this rather pretty village which is built on high ground we move into a relatively good billet in the home of 3 old women. I have to act as interpreter all the time.

25. April 1917

Wir rücken aus Vitry ab und marschieren über Brèbières nach Douai. Zusammen mit einer dort stationierten Fernsprechabteilung baut unser Trupp permanente Leitungen aus.

We pull out of Vitry and march via Brébières to Douai. Together with a telephone section stationed there our detachment extends the permanent system of phone lines.

2. RFI Mauville Ferme

Dieter schildert detailliert die Geschehnisse in der Mauville Ferme und wird Zeuge der endgültigen Zerstörung des Bauerhofes. Die Mauville Ferme ist ebenfalls bei google.maps abrufbar.

Ein Vergleich von Dieters Eintragung mit der heutigen Position zeigt eine unterschiedliche Position.
Dieter hat sich entweder bei seinen Eintragungen geirrt oder die Ferme ist nach dem Krieg an anderer Stelle wieder aufgebaut worden. Generell scheint die Ferme während des Krieges von größerer Bedeutung gewesen zu sein.

Dieter provides a detailed account of events in the Mauville farm and witnesses the final destruction of the farm buildings. Mauville farm can be seen in Google.maps .
A comparison of Dieter's entry with the present-day position shows the farm in a different place. Either he made a mistake in his entry, or the farm was rebuilt on a different siteafter the war. Overall, the wartime farm seems to have been a bigger structure.

Lorsqu'on compare l'inscription de Dieter avec la position actuelle, on constate une différence. Soit Dieter s'est trompé dans la localisation de la ferme, soit elle a été reconstruite sur un nouveau site après la guerre. Dans l'ensemble, la ferme de l'époque de la guerre semble avoir été plus importante que celle d'aujourd'hui.

Un raffronto tra la descrizione di Dieter e la posizione odierna mostra che oggi la fattoria è situata in un luogo diverso. Può trattarsi di un suo errore, oppure la fattoria potrebbe essere stata ricostruita altrove dopo la guerra. In ogni caso essa, al tempo della guerra, appare come una costruzione di più grandi dimensioni rispetto a quella odierna.

24. April 1917

Am letzten Nachmittag habe ich Dienst. Schon als ich mich am Mittag der Ferme nähere, sehe ich schon von weitem das Haus in rotem Staub gehüllt. Ein Volltreffer ist soeben eingeschlagen. Kaum bin ich in der Ferme angelangt und habe mich beim Apparat auf dem Dachboden niedergelassen, fährt wieder eine Granate ins Haus. Das halbe Dach stürzt ein, Fenster klirren, Steine fallen, Wände sinken.
Alle noch im Hause Verbliebenen bringen sich in Sicherheit. Auch ich mache mich aus dem Staube. Da fällt mir ein, dass der Apparat noch oben steht. Also noch einmal schnell ins Haus hinein, das jeden Augenblick zusammenstürzen kann, und auf den Boden hinauf! Dort steht noch der Kasten unbeschädigt. Ich baue ihn aus, werfe die Kabeldrähte zum Fenster hinaus, und im Tempo geht es wieder hinunter. Ungefähr 100m vor der Ferme fange ich jetzt die Leitung ab und führe sie in den Unterstand eines Lichtsignalisten hinein. Dort baue ich den Apparat wieder ein. Gottlob, die Leitung ist noch intakt! Gleich darauf erhalte ich den telefonischen Bescheid, dass die Divisionsbeobachtung auf der Mauville-Ferme aufgehoben ist. Jawohl, der Feind hatte sie aufgehoben! Ich hänge mir den Apparat um die Schulter, nehme die Batterie in die Hand und mache mich auf dem Weg nach rückwärts, d.h. [das heißt] nach Vitry. Der Tommy schießt wie verrückt. Mehrmals noch muß ich mich mit dem recht hinderlichen Gerät zu Boden werfen, um den Granateinschlägen auszuweichen. Erst gegen Abend treffe ich ein Vitry ein.

Alles in allem war die Beobachtung auf der Ferme jedoch eine tadellose Einrichtung. Mit aller Deutlichkeit konnte man durch die Scherenfernrohre die Infanterieangriffe verfolgen. Besonders lebhaft waren die Kämpfe um das Dorf Gavrelle und den Bahnhof Roeux. Immer wieder ging unsere Infanterie zum Sturmangriff vor, musste aber ebenso oft wieder zurück gehen, während die Tommies ihrerseits vorsprangen. Wir konnten ganz klar erkennen, wie die Engländer in ganzen Kolonnen auf der Vimy-Höhe heranrückten, ohne dass sie in ihrem Vorrücken ernstlich gestört wurden. Die vorderste Linie war durch das fortwährende Einschlagen großer Brocken ganz deutlich gekennzeichnet.

On the final afternoon I am on duty. Already as I am approaching the farm at midday, I can see from far away that the house is shrouded in red dust. It has just taken a direct hit. I have no sooner reached the farm and settled into the attic with the phone when another shell hits the house. Half of the roof collapses, there is a sound of breaking glass, stones fall and walls cave in.
All of us who were still in the house take cover a safe distance away. I too make my way out of the dust. Then I realise that the phone is still upstairs. So it's back as fast as possible into the house, which could collapse at any time, and up into the attic. The set is still there undamaged. So I disconnect it, throw the wire leads out the window and double downstairs. About 100 metres from the farm I pick up the leads and lay them down into a [Véry] light signaller's dugout. There I set the phone up again. Thank God, the connection is still intact. Immdiately after this, I get a phone message to say that the divisional OP in Mauville Farm has been closed down. Yes indeed, the enemy closed it down! I sling the phone over my shoulder, take the battery in my hand and make my way back from the front, i.e. towards Vitry. Tommy is firing like mad. Several times I have to throw myself flat on the ground in spite of the cumbersome phone set to dodge incoming shells. I don't reach Vitry till that evening.

All in all, though, the OP in the farm was an impeccable setup. With the periscopic binoculars it was possible to observe in great detail the infantry attacks. The fighting was particularly hot around the village of Gavrelle and Roeux railway station. Our infantry stormed the enemy positions again and again, but just as often they had to fall back as the enemy advanced. We could see clearly how the English advanced onto Vimy Ridge in regular columns without their advance being seriously disrupted. The frontmost line was clearly recognisable from the constant fall of great clods of earth [thrown up by shellfire].

Deve essere stato appena colpito da un tiro diretto. Non faccio in tempo a raggiungere la fattoria e prendere posto alla mia postazione telefonica nella soffitta, quando un'altra granata colpisce la casa. Metà tetto crolla con un suono di vetri rotti, di pietre che cadono e di muri che franano.
Quelli di noi che si trovano ancora nell'edificio si rifugiano a distanza di sicurezza. Anch'io trovo la via d'uscita in mezzo alla polvere. Mi rendo conto, allora, che il telefono è ancora di sopra. Così torno indietro il più velocemente possibile nella casa, che può crollare da un momento all'altro, e su di corsa in soffitta. La centralina del telefono è ancora lì, intatta. Allora la scollego, getto i capi del cavo telefonico fuori dalla finestra e ridiscendo precipitosamente le scale. Porto i capi della linea telefonica a circa 100 metri dall'edificio e li butto in un deposito sotterraneo di razzi di segnalazione. Qui rimetto a posto il telefono. Grazie a Dio i collegamenti funzionano ancora. Subito dopo mando un messaggio per comunicare che il posto di osservazione divisionale di Mauville Farm è stato chiuso. Sì, in verità il nemico lo aveva chiuso! Mi metto il telefono in spalla, prendo le batterie e torno indietro dal fronte, cioè vado verso Vitry. I Tommy sparano come matti. Parecchie volte sono costretto ad appiattirmi a terra, nonostante l'ingombro del telefono, per schivare le granate in arrivo. Riesco a raggiungere Vitry solo la sera.

Tutto considerato, il Punto di Osservazione nella fattoria era ben fatto. Con il periscopio binoculare era possibile osservare dettagliatamente gli attacchi della fanteria. I combattimenti erano particolarmente cruenti nei dintorni del villaggio di Gavrelle e della stazione ferroviaria di Roeux. La nostra fanteria tempestava senza sosta le posizioni nemiche, ma altrettante volte doveva ripiegare sotto la sua avanzata. Potevamo vedere chiaramente come le truppe Inglesi avanzavano in colonne ordinate verso il saliente di Vimy, e la loro avanzata non era mai seriamente interrotta. La prima linea era chiaramente riconoscibile dalla continua ricaduta di enormi zolle di terra (lanciate in aria dai colpi dell'artiglieria).

Vimy Höhe - Vimy Ridge

Die Schlacht von Arras fand am 9. April bis zum 16. Mai 1917 statt. Im Verlauf ihrer Offensive gelang es britischen und kanadischen Truppen, einen strategischen Höhenzug bei Vimy einzunehmen Schlacht von Vimy (engl. Battle of Vimy Ridge), ohne jedoch einen entscheidenden Erfolg zu erringen. Da das Gelände an der Somme für eine Durchbruchsoffensive ungeeignet war, sah Nivelle stattdessen vor, den Hauptangriff am Chemin des Dames zu führen, während die Briten eine Woche vorher bei Arras und am Vimy-Rücken diese Ablenkungsoffensive eröffnen sollten.

Der Angriffstermin wurde auf den Ostermontag, den 9. April um 05:30 Uhr festgelegt. Schnee und Nebel führten zu diesem Zeitpunkt zu schlechten Sichtverhältnissen. Nachdem der Angriff begonnen hatte, konnten die Briten schnell Raum gewinnen. Die deutschen Truppen wurden zum Teil in ihren Stellungen überrascht. Binnen weniger Stunden waren 9000 Gefangene eingebracht und ein Einbruch von 2 bis 5 Kilometern erzielt. Besonders erfolgreich war der Angriff der Kanadier auf den Vimy-Rücken, der bereits im ersten Anlauf genommen werden konnte.
Im weiteren Verlauf der Schlacht führten die Deutschen Verstärkungen heran und gingen an einigen Stellen zum Gegenangriff über, während die Briten ihre Artillerie nachzogen und versuchten, ihre Geländegewinne auszubauen. Mittlerweile hatten auch die Franzosen am 16. April ihre Offensive an der Aisne begonnen, die sich aber schnell zu einem Fiasko entwickelte. Die Briten gerieten dadurch unter Druck, ihre Angriffe fortzusetzen, konnten jedoch in der zweiten Phase der Schlacht ab dem 23. April gegen die jetzt besser gestaffelte deutsche Verteidigung nur noch kleinere Erfolge erzielen. Die Offensive endete schließlich, nachdem sich die deutschen Truppen wieder in feste Stellungen eingegraben hatten, in einem strategischen Patt und der Rückkehr zum gewohnten Stellungskrieg.

The Battle of Arras took place on 9 April to 16 May 1917. British and Canadian troops succeeded in taking a strategic ridge in Vimy (Known in English as The Battle of Vimy Ridge). It was not a decisive victory because the terrain on the Somme battleground was unsuitable for a breakthrough. Nivelle had decided the main attack to be on the Chemin des Dames, but a week before this battle the British at Arras and Vimy Ridge should open an attach as a distraction.

The attack date was on Easter Monday, 9 April clock set at 05:30. The visibility was poor due to snow and fog. The British were able to quickly gain ground and surprised some German troops in their positions. Within a few hours were 9000 prisoners had been taken and they had advanced 2-5 kilometres. Particularly successful was the attack of the Canadians on the Vimy Ridge, which was taken at the first attempt.

In the course of the battle, the Germans brought up reinforcements and counterattacked in places, while the British brought up their artillery and tried to expand their territorial gains. On April the 16th, the French began their offensive on the Aisne, which soon developed into a fiasco. The British were pressured to continue their attacks, however, in the second phase of the battle from 23 April they came up against better German defences and the attacked staggered with only minor successes. Finally the offensive ended, after the German troops had again dug into fixed strategic positions, and the war returned to the familiar stalemate of trench warfare.

16. April 1917

Morgens rücken wir ab nach der Mauville-Ferme. Dort ist jedoch kein Platz für uns. Wir fahren weiter nach Vitry. In einer kleinen netten Stube quartieren wir uns hier ein. Die Einwohner haben erst vor 2 Tagen das Dorf verlassen. Jetzt wird es vom Feind beschossen. Wir nehmen Quartierswechsel vor und ziehen in einen Keller.

In den nächsten Tagen gibt es eine Menge Tote und Verwundete im Ort. Der Feind beschießt besonders stark den Bahndamm. Mit 3 Mann von unserem Trupp verrichten wir Ablösungsdienst auf der Mauville-Ferme, in deren Dachgeschoß die Divisionsbeobachtung untergebracht ist. Von uns muß stets ein Mann den Fernsprechapparat überwachen und betreuen, im Falle dass eventuelle Störungen im Apparat oder in den Leitungen auftreten. Die letzten Tage wird es ganz besonders schlimm. Andauernd wird das Gelände um die Ferme beschossen; zuletzt schießt der Tommy sogar in die Ferme hinein. Die Divisionsbeobachtung um Hause muß bis zuletzt aufrecht erhalten werden; folglich müssen auch wir aushalten.

In the morning, we move out to Mauville Farm. But there is no room for us there. We travel on further to Vitry. We take up quarters in a nice little room. The inhabitants only left the village 2 days ago. Now it is under enemy fire. We change quarters and move into a cellar.

In the following days there are a whole lot of dead and wounded in the village. The enemy fire is particularly concentrated on the railway embankment. With 3 men from our detachment we set up a shift system in Mauville Farm, in the attic of which the divisional Observation Post is established. One of us must keep watch on the phone and repair any faults that occur in the set or the lines. In the last few days it gets particularly bad, there is constant fire on the area around the farm; finally the Tommies begin shelling the farm itself. The divisional post has to be manned to the very end, so we too have to stick it out.

Al mattino ci muoviamo verso la fattoria di Mauville (frazione di Fresnes). Ma non c'è posto per noi. Allora proseguiamo per Vitry. Ci sistemiamo in una piccola stanza, abbastanza carina. Gli abitanti avevano lasciato il villaggio due giorni prima. Ora siamo sotto il fuoco nemico. Cambiamo sistemazione e ci rifugiamo in una cantina.

Nei giorni seguenti ci saranno un sacco di morti e feriti nel villaggio. Il fuoco del nemico è particolarmente concentrato sulle banchine della ferrovia. Con tre uomini del nostro reparto prepariamo un turno di servizio alla fattoria di Mauville, nella cui soffitta abbiamo approntato il punto di osservazione. Uno di noi deve stare di guardia al telefono e riparare qualunque danno possano subire le linee telefoniche. Negli ultimi giorni la situazione si fa particolarmente pesante, c'è un fuoco continuo sull'area intorno alla fattoria; alla fine i Tommy iniziano a cannoneggiare la fattoria stessa. Il posto di osservazione divisionale deve essere tenuto fino alla fine, perciò anche noi dobbiamo resistere.

10. April 1917

Mittags Weiterfahrt über Vitry-en-Artois nach Fresnes. In einem Keller richten hier mit unserem Trupp eine Station ein. Vom Keller aus sind bereits zwei Stollen in die Erde gebaut, an denen wir noch ein wenig weiter arbeiten. Schon sehr bald wird das Dorf vom Feind unter Feuer genommen, der erheblich weiter vorgekommen ist. Unsere Truppen liegen kurz hinter Gavrelle. 2 Mann unseres Zuges werden im Ort verwundet. Die beiden anderen mit uns nach Fresnes gekommenen Trupps kehren nach Vitry zurück. Somit bleibt unser Trupp allein im Dorfe zurück.

Die folgenden Tage vergehen mit dem Einrichten des Stationsdienstes.

At midday we continue via Vitry-en-Artois to Fresnes. With the other members of the detachment we set up a telephone switchboard in a cellar. Two underground shelters have already been dug out leading off from the cellar, and we do a bit of work to improve these. Very soon the village comes under fire from the enemy, who has advanced a significant distance. Our troops are just behind Gavrelle. 2 men from our platoon are wounded there. The two other detachments that came with us to Fresnes go back to Vitry. So our detachment stays on alone in the village.

The following days are spent setting up a routine for running the telephone post.

A mezzogiorno si riparte per Fresnes attraverso Vis-en-Artois.. Con gli altri membri del reparto sistemiamo una centralina telefonica in un locale sotterraneo. Sono già stati scavati due rifugi che comunicano direttamente con questo locale e ci diamo da fare per sistemare meglio queste opere. Molto presto il villaggio viene a trovarsi sotto il fuoco nemico che è avanzato significativamente. Le nostre truppe sono proprio dietro Gravelle. Due uomini del nostro plotone vengono feriti. Gli altri due reparti venuti con noi a Fresnes tornano indietro a Vitry. Così il nostro reparto si trova da solo A Vitry.

9. April 1917

Kurz nach Mitternacht rücken wir aus Douai ab. Die Kämpfe bei Arras sind nämlich für uns ziemlich brenzlig geworden. Der Tommy hat den Bayern die ganze Vimy-Höhe entrissen. Aus diesem Grunde müssen neue Streitkräfte nach vorn. Wir rücken mit unseren Bauwagen ab über Corbehem nach Brébières. Hier habe ich noch einige Stunden auf einem Schanktisch geschlafen.

Shortly after midnight, we move out of Douai. The fighting around Arras has got rather tricky for us. The Tommies have taken the whole Vimy Ridge from the Bavarians. Consequently, new forces have to move forward. We move with our construction wagons via Corbehem to Brébières. Here I sleep for a few hours on a bistrot table.

Poco dopo mezzanotte lasciamo Douai. I combattimenti attorno ad Arras si fanno troppo pericolosi per noi. I Tommy hanno conquistato l'intera altura di Vimy, strappandola ai Bavaresi. Per questo nuove forze devono farsi avanti. Ci muoviamo con i mezzi del genio via Corbehem verso Brébièries. Qui dormo per qualche ora sul tavolo di un bistrot.

7. April 1917

Abmarsch von Denain über Lewarde, Déchy nach Douai. Die gesamte Fernsprech-Abteilung bezieht Quartier in einer Kaserne. Douai ist eine große Stadt mit schönen Bauten, prächtigen Kirchen und hübschen Parkanlagen.

We march off from Denain via Lewarde, Déchy to Douai. The whole signals unit takes up quarters in a barracks. Douai is a big town with beautiful buildings, splendid churches and pretty parks.
