8. Oktober 1918

Frühmorgens Ankunft in Hirson.

Early in the morning I arrive at Hirson. Here, I report at the hospital collection point. In the morning, I get sent with a wounded transport to Mommigny (Momignies), a small village right after the frontier in Belgium. I arrive there before noon and head to the saxonian war hostpital no. 19C. At noon I am presented to the doctor and accepted to the ear ward.
---
Hopsital life, I like very much again. Every day my ear gets washed and anointed by a nurse. That is all. Only thing is rations are not very splendid. The building is a former teacher's seminar room and is furnished very well. Apart from the hosptial, there is also a library, a bookshop, a canteen and a hall for cinema in the building. Hence, there is plenty of distraction. After 4 to 5 days, nothing is to be seen at my ear, nevertheless I endure a strong 10 days in hospital.

Arrivo lì prima di mezzogiorno e mi dirigo all'ospedale di guerra Sassone nr. 19C. A mezzogiorno mi presento al medico e mi ricoverano al reparto ORL.
---
La vita d'ospedale, mi piace molto. Ogni giorno mi fanno sciacqui all'orecchio e un'infermiera mi applica unguenti.

In the morning I walk over to the war hospital in the city. An ear department does not exist here. I am directed on to Vervins.
Later this same morning I arrive there. I show up at the ear department here in the village. But here I get rejected, since the ear department is being closed down. I get directed back to Hirson.

5. Oktober 1918

Because of a minor ear disease I am to report at the field hospital 285 at Notre Dame de Liesse for medical examination.

Of course I take all my belongings with me, since I am not likely to return the next days. I start walking from Bruyères to Notre Dame de Liesse via Athies, Samoussy, and Gizy. There, I search for the field hospital just to learn that the ear department is no loger at Liesse. The closest ear treating department is said to be in Hirson. I spend the night at the sleeping point at the train station.

On March 22nd 1918 Dieter described the death of his divisional commander Generalmajor Block von Blottnitz during the german spring offensive at the Hargicourt quarry.

In this context, he also mentions, that the general was very popular amongst his soldiers and "every single one [...] owned a post-card sized photography of him".

After a three-year search on eBay I finally managed to get hold of such a card. I am happy to present it to the readers of Dieter's blog.
