Christmas Cake

Following is a literal translation of the pictured card. Dieter had written it in form of a poem; to be able to precisely translate the content, the rhyme form is lost unfortunately.

With candied citron peel, raisins and almond
the Christmas cake must be treated,
jam is made with sugar,
without eggs the cake tastes dull,
and dull it is now again
that nothing of all that is around.


Take 12 eggs, a quarter pound of almonds, 30g candied orange peel.

24. Dezember 1939

Am Vormittag geübt. Ab 1 Uhr bin ich U.v.D. Für die Weihnachtstage wird Alarmzustand verkündet. Um 5Uhr nachmittags gehen wir nach Vicht. Um 6 Uhr beginnt die Weihnachtsfeier. Sie ist wirklich schön. Der Saal ist hübsch geschmückt, und die Tische sind fein arrangiert.
Jeder hat einen bunten Teller und eine Flasche Wein vor sich; außerdem gibt es Punsch. Der Hauptmann hält eine Ansprache. Wir spielen Weihnachtslieder und anschließend Soldatenlieder. Die Kameraden singen. Wir trinken viel Wein am Abend. Um 10 Uhr ist Schluß. Der Weihnachtsmann (Uffz. Wendt) hatte mir einen netten Vers überreicht; es war ein Hieb auf den Spieß. Insgesamt habe ich 21 Weihnachtspakete erhalten.
 

Practised in the morning. From 1 p.m. on I am sergeant of the guard. For the Christmas days, alert status has been declared. 5 o'clock in the afternoon we go to Vicht. At 6 o'clock the Christmas ceremony starts. It is really beautiful. The ballroom is decorated nicely and the tables are arranged wonderfully.
Everyone receives a plate of Christmas goodies and a bottle of wine; additionally, there is hot punch available. The captain gives a short speech. We play Christmas songs and afterwards soldier's tunes. The comrades sing. We drink a lot of wine in the evening. The party ends at 10 o'clock. Santa Claus (Unteroffizier Wendt) hat presented me a nice rhyme; it was a dig at the company sergeant major. Altogether, I received 21 Christmas parcels.
