Die Regimentschronik gibt Aufschluß über die weiteren Rückmarschbewegungen des Regiments. Offenbar blieb Dieter mit Teilen der Division zurück in hann. Münden während die 3 Bataillone mit der Bahn in ihre jeweiligen Garnisonen transportiert wurden.
Das Regiment marschierte durch Kassel und ward in der Umgegend von hann. Münden untergebracht. Von hier aus wurde das III. Bat. am 22. Dezember, 1 Uhr nachts, verladen. Am 24 Dezember, morgens 11 Uhr traf es in Sonderburg ein. Der Stab und das II. Bat. – die Reste des I. Bat. waren auf dieses verteilt – fuhren am Morgen des 23. ab. Sie sollten Weihnachten nicht zu Hause verleben, sondern trafen erst am 25. Dezember, 9.30 morgens, auf der Flensburger Weiche ein.
