Mit allen übrigen hier untergebrachten Soldaten siedele ich nach der Löffelfabrik über. Die ganzen Fabrikgebäude sind mit Stacheldraht umgeben, und Posten mit Gewehr passen auf, daß niemand heraus kommt. Wir sitzen also regelrecht im Gefängnis. Man denke nur, daß deutsche Soldaten von Deutschen bewacht werden! Soweit ist es also schon gekommen, daß man zu solchen Mitteln greifen muß, um reisende oder versprengte Soldaten zusammenzuhaltenNun, leider muß man sagen, daß sich in der Etappe bald mehr Leute herumtreiben als an der Front. In der Nacht erfolgt ein fünfmaliger Fliegerangriff auf Hirson. Eine Bombe fällt 50 m von unserem Quartier auf einen Hof.
Together with all other soldiers that are accommodated here, I move over to the Spoon factory. All factory buildings are surrounded with barbed wire, and guards with rifles prevent anyone to get out. So we practically are imprisoned. Imagine, german soldiers are guarded by Germans! This is how far we got, to employ such measures for keeping together travelling or scattered soldiers.Well, unfortunately one must admit that almost more people run around in the back area than on the front-line. During the night, Hirson is attacked five times by aeroplanes. One bomb comes down in a court 50 metres from our quarters.

Insieme a tutti gli altri soldati sistemati lì, ci spostiamo alla fabbrica di cucchiai. Tutti gli edifici sono circondati da reticolati, e guardie armate di fucile sornegliano che nessuno esca. Così siamo praticamente imprigionati. Provate ad immaginare, soldati tedeschi sorvegliati da tedeschi! Questo per dire a che punto siamo arrivati, per prendere tali misure per tenere insieme soldati in movimento e sparpagliati.Bene, sfortunatamente bisogna ammettere che c'è più gente nelle retrovie che al fronte. Durante la notte Hirson subisce cinque attacchi aerei. Una bomba cade in un cortile a 50 metri da noi.
