Durchmarsch

Mountain troops with ponies head
westwards in crowds like giant herds
to capture the Vosges ridge is their intent
and each man to defend himself to the end

So conduct of the war is right
the anti-tank gun is quite vital
Hitched to lorries many such guns have found
Their way through our town.

The Blitzkrieg is well known to us indeed
Engines help conquer enemy land at speed
But do beware, when they are then set free,
there's no resistance to their wild careering
Through the narrow streets of folk like you and me,
So run, instead of strolling, stopping, staring.

"Better safe than sorry" they advise,
and so that you avoid the airmens' eyes
the German forest is the place to hide
and paint yourself both brightly-hued and pied.

14. Juni 1940

Unsere Nachtruhe war nur von kurzer Dauer. Schon zu früher Morgenstunde müssen wir hoch, da die Kompanie eintrifft. Mit einer jungen Belgierin, die aus Tournai stammt, deren Elternhaus von Bomben zerstört ist und die wie Tausende von ihren Landsleuten nach Frankreich geflohen war, habe ich eine nette Unterhaltung über belgische Politik. Sie gehört der nationalistischen Partei Ornat (Hornat?) an, die nach Hitler und Mussolini ausgerichtet ist, und weiß gut Bescheid über deutsche und italienische Verhältnisse. „Mein Kampf“ hat sie in französischer Übersetzung gelesen. Ich habe in sprachlicher Hinsicht bereits viel dazu gelernt; die Geläufigkeit im Französichparlieren wird von Tag zu Tag besser. Nachmittags kommt plötzlich der Befehl zum Abmarsch. Eine große Tour steht uns wieder bevor. Es geht über Tournai, Hollain, bei Maulde über die belgisch-französische Grenze, weiter über Thun, Nivelle, St. Amand, bei Hasnon über die Scarpe, dann über Wallers, Hellesmes, Denain (Weltkrieg!), Lourches, Mastaing, Iwuy, Cambrai, Niergnies, Forenville nach Sérangoillers.

Cambrai ist sehr zerstört. Die Gegend zwischen Denain und Cambrai und darüber hinaus ist mir gut bekannt. Neben dem kleinen Ort Sérangoillers, in dem wir Quartier machen, liegt ein ehemaliger französischer, jetzt deutscher Flugplatz. Viele französische Flugzeuge liegen zerstört am Boden.
Ich quartiere mich mit einigen Kameraden im Dachgeschoß des Schlosses ein und habe eine wunderschöne Matratze. Es gelingt mir, französischen Rotwein aufzutreiben, der uns allen gut schmeckt. Trotz der Ermahnung vor feindlichen Fliegerangriffen auf der Hut zu sein, die in der letzten Zeit wegen des nahen Flugplatzes sich öfter ereigneten, passiert nichts. Wir schlafen vortrefflich.
 

Our night's rest didn't last long. Early in the morning we have to get up as the Company is arriving. I have a pleasant conversation about Belgian politics with a young Belgian woman from Tournai, whose family home has been destroyed by bombing and who like thousands of her compatriots have fled towards France. She belongs to the nationalist party called Ornat (Hornat?) which is aligned with Hitler and Mussolini, and knows a lot about German-Italian relationships. She has read "Mein Kampf" in the French translation. In linguistic terms I have already learned a lot that is new; my fluency in French conversation gets better every day. Suddenly in the afternoon we receive the command to march on. Another great trek lies before us. It takes us through Tournai, Hollain, via Maulde over the Belgian-French border, on through Thun, Nivelle, St. Amand, via Hasnon over the Scarpe, then through Wallers, Hellesmes,Denain (1st World War!), Lourches, Mastaing, Iwuy, Cambrai, Niergnies, Forenville to Sérangoillers.

Cambrai is badly destroyed. The area between Denain and Cambrai and beyond is well known to me. Near the small town of Sérangoillers, where we take up quarters, there is a formerly French airfield, now German. There are many destroyed French planes on the ground.
I and a few fellow-soldiers have quarters in the attic floor of the castle, and have wonderfully good mattresses. I manage to get hold of some French red wine, which we all enjoy. Although we are warned to be alert for enemy air attack, which has recently occurred frequently because of the nearby airfield, nothing happens. We sleep wonderfully.
