2. August 1918

Mittags rücken wir von Cys ab. Von hier bauen wir eine 12 km lange Leitung über die Aisne auf den Chemin des Dames zur Malval- Ferme. Während des Baues, der uns durch sehr unwegsames Gelände, durch Drahtverhau, Sumpf, usw. führt, herrscht das denkbar schlechteste Wetter. Nachts um12 Uhr komme wir an der Malval-Ferme an.

Gott sei Dank, die Leitung funktioniert! Quartier ist nirgends zu kriegen, denn alle Dörfer sind zerschossen. Dabei sind wir zum Umfallen müde. Ich krieche sogleich in ein Erdloch hinein und habe dort einige Stunden fest geschlafen.

At noon we leave Cys. Starting from here, we build a communications line 12 kilometres long across the Aisne to the Malval-Farm on the Chemin des Dames. During the line construction that leads us through very difficult terrain, wire obstacles, swamp and so on, the weather is the worst you can think of. At midnight, we arrive at the Malval-Farm.
Thank god, the line is operational! We can not get any quarters, because all villages are destroyed by shelling. We are drop-dead tired. I crawl into a little foxhole and have deeply slept there for several hours.

A mezzogiorno lasciamo Cys. Da qui posiamo una linea di comunicazione lunga 12 km. attraverso l'Aisne fino alla Fattoria Malval sullo Chemin des Dames. Durante la posa in opera della linea che ci porta su terreno molto difficile, reticolati, acquitrini e così via, il tempo è il peggiore che si possa immaginare. A mezzanotte arriviamo alla Fattoria Malval.
Grazie a Dio , la linea è operativa! Non ci possiamo sistemare da nessuna parte, perché i paesi sono tutti distrutti dai bombardamenti. Siamo morti di stanchezza. Riesco ad infilarmi in una buca e lì ho dormito profondamente per parecchie ore.

Als die Letzten unserer Einheit rücken wir mit dem Trupp Kirch abends von Limé ab. Wir gehen über Braine, Brenelle, Presles nach Cys-la Commune. Auf dem Boden eines Hauses schlafen wir einige Stunden.

Being the last ones of our unit we leave Limé in the evening with troup Kirch. We go via Braine, Brenelle, Presles to Cys-la Commune. We sleep for some hours on the floor of a house.

30. Juli 1918

Es gelingt uns, im Ort ein ganz nettes für unseren Trupp passendes Quartier ausfindig zu machen, das wir anschließend beziehen. Wir bauen im Dorf verschiedene Kabelleitungen ab. Unsere Division soll den Rückzug der Deutschen an der Marne mit aufhalten helfen, der schon ein beschleunigtes Tempo angenommen hat. Die meisten der im Orte untergebrachten Truppen verschwinden schon nach hinten.

We manage to find quite a nice quarter for our squad in the village, where we accomodate ourselfes. We dismantle several cable lines in the village. Our division is to help stopping the german withdrawal from the Marne, which has alreday gained an increased momentum. Most of the troops positioned in this village already disppear to the rear areas.

Ci diamo da fare per trovare una buona sistemazione la nostra squadra in paese, ed in effetti qui ci sistemiamo. Smantelliamo molte linee telefoniche in paese. La nostra Divisione deve dare una mano a fermare la ritirata Tedesca dalla Marna, ritirata che è già precipitosa.
La maggior parte dei soldati sistemati in questo paese sono già spariti nelle retrovie.

29. Juli 1918

Nachmittags Abmarsch vom Schloß über Braine. Wir überqueren die Vesle und kommen nach dem einige Kilometer entfernten Limé. Auf einem Felde übernachten wir im Freien.

In the afternoon, we march off from the castle via Braine. We cross the Vesle and come to Limé, in a few kilometres distance. We spend the night in plain open on a field.

Nel pomeriggio partiamo in marcia dal castello via Braine. Attraversiamo il fiume Vesle e andiamo a Limé, pochi chilometri più in là. Passiamo la notte all'aperto in un campo.

27. Juli 1918

Morgens früh Abmarsch von Crécy-au Mont. Es regnet während des Marsches wieder sehr stark, so daß alle Sachen durchnässt werden. Wir marschieren über Terny, Neuvile-sur Margival, Laffaux, Sancy und Wailly, wo wir die Aisne erreichen und überschreiten. Weiter geht es über Chassémy und Braine nach einem hochgelegenem Schlosse hinauf weit außerhalb des Ortes.
Das Schloss liegt mitten im Wald. Es ist von einem Barackenlager umgeben, das für Flieger völlig unsichtbar ist. Das Laub der Bäume verdeckt alles. In einer kleinen Baracke finden wir Unterkunft. Das war heute mal wieder eine prächtige Tour. Nur schade, daß das Wetter so scheußlich war! Die Landschaft ist wirklich sehr anmutig und abwechslungsreich.

Early in the morning we are marching off from Crécy-au Mont. Again it is raining heavily throughout the march, so all our belongings are wet. We march via Terny, Neuvile-sur Margival, Laffaux, Sancy and Wailly, where we reach and cross the Aisne. On we march via Chassémy and Braine to a high placed castle far outside the city.
The castle is located in the middle of a forest. It is surrounded by a barracks camp, which is completely invisible to aeroplanes. The trees' leaves cover everything. In a small barrack, we find shelter. It has been a great tour again today. Pitiful, that the weather was that ugly! The landscape really is very lovely and varying.

Di primo mattino partiamo in marcia da Crécy-au Mont. Di nuovo piove a dirotto durante la marcia, cosicché tutto il nostro equipaggiamento è bagnato. Marciamo via Terny, Neuville-sur-Margival, Laffaux, Sancy e Wailly, dove raggiungiamo e attraversiamo l'Aisne. Quindi marciamo via Chassémy e Braine verso un castello, in alto, ben fuori dal paese.
Il castello si trova nel mezzo di una foresta. E' circondato da un accampamento di soldati che è completamente invisibile agli aeroplani. Le fronde degli alberi coprono tutto. troviamo rifugio in una piccola costruzione. E' stato un gran bel giro oggi. Peccato che il tempo sia stato così orribile! Il paesaggio è veramente bello e vario.

23. Juli 1918

Morgens 1230 Uhr Abfahrt des Transports über Tourcoing, Roubaix, Lannoy, Orchies, Marchiennes, Somain, Denain, Solesmes, le Cateau, Bohain, St. Quentin, die schöne Stadt, die schon arg zugerichtet ist. Auch die berühmte Kathedrale ist eine Ruine. Weiter geht die Eisenbahnfahrt über Tergnier nach Chauny. Hier treffen wir am Nachmittag ein.

Nachdem alles ausgeladen ist, geht es zu Fuß weiter. Während des ganzen Marsches regnet es unaufhörllich, so daß wir bald bis auf die Haut durchnässt sind. Wir marschieren über die Oise nach Sinceny und weiter über Autreville, Pierremande, le Vivier, Folembray nach Concey-le Château, einer sehr hochgelegenen scheinbar sehr alten Festung.
Rings um die Stadt zieht sich noch die alte Mauer. Von dem einst sicher sehr prächtigen Schloß stehen nur noch die Ruinen. Bei dem derzeitigen Rückzug der Deutschen ist es in die Luft gesprengt worden. Weiter führt uns der Marsch über le Paradis nach Crécy-au Mont.
Wir sind in einer wunderhübschen Gegend. Überall erheben sich schöne mit Wald bestandene Höhen, die wiederum lieblichen Tälern Platz machen, durch die sich zuweilen ein kleiner Wasserlauf windet. Das Traurige an der Sache ist jedoch, daß inmitten dieser ganzen Pracht die reizvoll gelegenen Dörfer und Städtchen vernichtet sind. Sie alle wurden beim Rückzug der Deutschen im vorigen Jahre gesprengt. Auf einer feuchten Wiese bauen wir unsere Zelte auf und beziehen unser dürftiges Quartier. Von meinem heutigen Geburtstag habe ich außer einer Durchnässung bis auf die Haut nichts gehabt.

Die folgenden Tage gehen mit dem Bau von Leitungen und vor allem mit dem Aufsuchen und Aufrollen von alten Kabeln hin. Es bereitet mir großen Spaß durch die herrliche Natur mit ihren reizvollen Höhen und Tälern zu streifen.

At noon 1230 our transport leaves via Tourcoing, Roubaix, Lannoy, Orchies, Marchiennes, Somain, Denain, Solesmes, le Cateau, Bohain and St. Quentin, a beautiful city that already has been mangled quite some. Also the famous cathedral lies in ruins. On the journey goes via Tergier to Chauny. We arrive in the afternoon.

After dismounting and unloading, we continue on foot. Throughout the whole march, it rains ceaselessly. Soon, we are soaking wet. We march on crossing the Oise to Sinceny and further on via Autreville, Pierremande, le Vivier and Folembray to Concey-le-Château, a very high-placed and obviously very old fortification.
Around the city still the old ringwall stretches. Only ruins are left of the once beautiful castle. During the current german withdrawal, it has been blasted. On the march leads us via le Paradis to Crécy-au Mont.
We are in a very lovely landscape. Green hills are rolling covered with trees, in turn giving space to lovely valleys, sometimes with a small winding creek. The sad side of this is, that amidst all this magnificence the lovely situated small villages and cities have been destroyed. They all have been blasted with the german withdrawal last year. On a damp meadow we set up our tents. Apart from being soaked wet, I did not get anything from this my birthday today.

The following days we spend with building lines and most of all searching and recovering old cables. I take great pleasure in strolling through the nature with its delightful hills and valleys.

Dopo esser scesi dai mezzi e dopo aver scaricato l'equipaggiamento, continuiamo a piedi. Durante l'intera marcia piove incessantemente. Ben presto siamo completamente bagnati. Marciamo attraversando l'Oise verso Sincerny e, quindi, via Autreville, Pierremande, le Vivier e Folembray fino a Concey-le-Château, una località molto elevata e già anticamente fortificata.

Attorno alla città si allunga ancora la vecchia cinta muraria. Restano solo rovine dell'antico bellissimo castello. Durante l'attuale ritirata Tedesca è andato distrutto. Proseguiamo la marcia via le Paradis verso Crécy-au-Mont.
Ci troviamo in un bel paesaggio. Verdi colline sono coperte di alberi, alternandosi a belle vallate, talvolta anche a tortuosi torrenti. Il lato triste della faccenda è che, nel mezzo di tutta questa bellezza, i bei paesi e le città sono stati tutti distrutti. Sono andati perduti durante la ritirata Tedesca dell'anno scorso.

22. Juli 1918

Morgens 1230 Uhr Abmarsch der Abteilung von Wambréchies. Wir marschieren über Roubaix, Tourcoing, über die belgische Grenze nach Mouscron. Weit außerhalb des Städtchens werden wir in einer Ferme untergebracht. Hier bleiben wir bis zum abend und marschieren dann nach Mouscron zurück, um hier verladen zu werden.

At noon 1230 the department leaves Wambréchies. We march via Roubaix, Tourcoing across the belgian border to Mouscron. Far outside the little town we take quarter in a farm. Here, we stay until the evening and then march back to Mouscron, to be loaded onto a transport there.

Alle 12.30 il reparto lascia Wambréchies. Marciamo via Roubaix, Tourcoing, attraverso il confine belga fino a Mouscron. Bel fuori dalla piccola cittadina, ci acquartieriamo in una fattotia. Stiamo qui fino a sera e poi, di nuovo in marcia, torniamo a Mouscron, dove dobbiamo prender posto su un convoglio.
