Da das Wasser im Dorf fast vollständig versiegt ist, sind wir genötigt, Croix zu verlassen. Die Kompanie rückt in das Nachbardorf Humières. Since the water in the village has almost completely run out, we are instructed to leave Croix. The company moves to the neighbouring village of Humières. FRA

Mit 6 Lastwagen fahren wir über Hesdin, Lespinoy, Brimeux, Montreuil sur Mer, Neuville, Beutin, Énveq, Étaples nach Le Touquet-Paris Plage an den Strand. Wir sind am Ärmelkanal. Der Ort ist nicht sehr groß. Die großen Hotels an der Strandreihe machen keinen überwältigenden Eindruck. Die meisten großen Häuser sind geschlossen. Die Preise im Ort sind ziemlich hoch. Es ist Ebbe, als wir mittags um 12 Uhr ins Wasser steigen. Wir müssen gut 10 Minuten über muschelreichen Strand laufen, ehe wir das Wasser erreichen. Wir nehmen ein erfrischendes Bad. Nachher kaufen wir im Städtchen noch einige Kleinigkeiten und essen zu Mittag. Nachmittags geht es zurück. We drive with 6 lorries via Hesdin, Lespinoy, Brimeux, Montreuil sur Mer, Neuville, Beutin, Énveq, Étaples to Le Touquet-Paris Plage by the beach. We are on the Channel coast. The town is not very big. The big hotels lined along the beach don't make a huge impression. Most of the big houses are closed up. The prices in the town are quite high. The tide is out when we go into the water at 12 noon. We have to walk for a good 10 minutes over the beach covered in shells before we reach the water. We have a refreshing bathe. Afterwards we buy a few more small things in the little town and have lunch. In the afternoon we head back. FRA

Die Tage vergehen mit geringem Dienst. Wir fahren nach St. Pol und haben zeitweilig Gelegenheit, einige Einkäufe zu machen. Hierbei habe ich nette Unterhaltungen mit verschiedenen Einwohnern, ganz prächtigen Leuten, sie sich immer aufrichtig freuen, wenn ich zu ihnen komme. The days go by with minimal duties. We go to St. Pol and have a bit of time to buy some things. As I did so I had nice conversations with various locals, really splendid people, who are always really delighted when I visit them. FRA

Die im Ort gemachten Quartiere gefallen Lt. Hebecker nicht; insbesondere sind nicht genügend Ställe für die Unterbringung der Pferde vorhanden. The billets which we found in the village are not to the liking of Lt. Hebecker; in particular not enough stabling is available to accommodate the horses. For this reason we move on to the neighbouring village of Croix. Here we start billeting all over again. In the afternoon I go to the provisions base in St. Pol. Since no provisions are being handed out before 7p.m., we have plenty of time to do some shopping. Afterwards we eat impeccably in a restaurant and the two of us pay for a chop, salad, 2 fried eggs and a big cup of soup each a total of 75 pfennig. In the evening we go to our quarters. Sonntag! Sehr heißes Wetter! Nachmittags heißt es plötzlich: „Fertig machen zum Abmarsch!“ Um 615 Uhr rücken wir als Vorauskommando ab über Aveluy, Bouzincourt, Hédeanville, Forceville, Acheux, Louvencourt, Vauchelles, Sarton, Amplier, Authieule, Doullers, Bouquemaison, Frévent, Nuncq, Herlin-le See, St. Pol nach Ramecourt. Während der langen Fahrt kommen wir durch eine sehr hügelige Landschaft, die vom Kriege gänzlich unberührt ist. Nichts ist zerschossen. In Ramecourt beginnt sofort das Quartiermachen. Es wir sehr spät dabei. Ich schlafe in einem tadellosen Bett. Man spricht davon, daß unsere Division bald abgelöst werden soll. Ob die Kampfhandlungen in Frankreich nun endgültig vorbei sind, wissen wir nicht. Wir warten auf bestimmte Nachrichten. Sunday! Very hot weather! In the afternoon we get the sudden order "Prepare for departure!" At 6.15 we set off as advance guard through Aveluy, Bouzincourt, Hédeanville, Forceville, Acheux, Louvencourt, Vauchelles, Sarton, Amplier, Authieule, Doullers, Bouquemaison, Frévent, Nuncq, Herlin-le See, St. Pol to Ramecourt. During the long journey we go through a very hilly landscape, which is completely untouched by the war. Nothing has been hit. In Ramecourt we start immediately with billeting. It takes us until late. I sleep in an immaculate bed. There is talk that our division will soon be dissolved. Whether hostilities in France are now finally over we don't know. We wait for precise news. FRA
