Abmarsch von Denain über Lewarde, Déchy nach Douai. Die gesamte Fernsprech-Abteilung bezieht Quartier in einer Kaserne. Douai ist eine große Stadt mit schönen Bauten, prächtigen Kirchen und hübschen Parkanlagen.

We march off from Denain via Lewarde, Déchy to Douai. The whole signals unit takes up quarters in a barracks. Douai is a big town with beautiful buildings, splendid churches and pretty parks.

Marciamo da Denain via Lewarde, Déchy verso Douai. L'intera compagnia comunicazioni si sistema in una caserma. Douai è una grossa città con bei palazzi, splendide chiese e bei giardini.

24. März 1917

Am Vormittag findet eine Parade vor unserem Divisionskommandeur, Generalmajor von Blottnitz statt.

In Denain werden wir kommandierten Infanteristen endlich den Fernsprechtrupps zugeteilt. Ich komme zum Trupp Möbius, einem Unteroffizier, den ich von allen bisherigen Korporalschaftsführern am höchsten schätze.

In Demain the commanded infanterists are being finally ordered to the telefony detachment. I am assigned to the Möbius Squad, a sergeant I asteem the most from all squadleaders I´ve had sofar.

A Denain, nous autres fantassins désignés sommes enfin versés dans le détachement des transmissions. Je suis affecté à la section Möbius, un sous-officier que j’estime être le meilleur de tous ceux que j’ai connus jusqu’à présent.

A Denain i fanti designati sono finalmente assegnati al reparto telefonisti. Io sono assegnato alla squadra di Möbius, uno dei sottufficiali che stimo di più tra quelli che ho avuto fino ad ora.

In March 1917 Dieter described large destructions in preparation of a planned retreat, which were part of Operation Alberich:

Um uns gehen die Dörfer in Flammen auf; der gesamte Horizont ist blutrot. Ein schaurig-prächtiges Bild!

All around us, villages are going up in flames. The whole horizon is blood-red. A picture of terrible beauty!

Autour de nous les villages sont consumés par les flammes: tout l’horizon est rouge sang. Tableau d’une beauté terrible!

Attorno a noi i paesi sono distrutti dalle fiamme: tutto l'orizzonte è rosso sangue. Quadro di una bellezza terribile!

19. März 1917

Weitermarsch über Marq, Marquette, Mastaing, Roeulx, Lourches nach Denain einer größeren Stadt mit vielen Fabriken und Kohlenbergwerken. Die Zivilbevölkerung ist noch da, ungefähr 25.000 Einwohner.
Sogar Theater und Kino sind vorhanden. Das verspricht endlich einmal ein bisschen Abwechslung. In einer geräumten leeren Etage werden wir mit vielen Kameraden zusammengepfercht.

Die Tage in Denain gehen hin mit Exerzieren, Appells, Waffenreinigen, Putz- und Flickstunden sowie Instruktionsstunden.

We continue our march via Marq, Marquette, Mastaing, Roeulx, Lourches to Denain a larger city with many factories and coal mines. The civil population is still there, about 25.000 inhabitants.
Even a theatre and a cinema are available. Finally that promises some diversion. Together with a lot of other camerades we are pent-up in an evacuated floor.

The days in Denain elapse with execises, muster, cleaning of weapons, ours for cleaning and maintenance of our uniform, as with instructions.

Nous continuons à pied via Marq, Marquette, Mastaing, Roeulx, Lourches jusqu‘à Denain, une ville plus grande avec beacoup d’usines et de mines à charbon. La population civile y est vit toujours, environ 25.000 habitants.
Il y a même un théâtre et un cinéma. Cela promet enfin un peu de divertissement. Nous sommes entassés avec un grand nombre de camarades à un étage qui a été vidé.

Les journées à Denain passent avec entraînements, rassemblements, nettoyage des armes, nettoyage et recouture des uniformes ainsi que cours de formation.

Continuiamo la marcia via Marq, Marquette, Mastaing, Roeulx, Lourches fino a Denain, una cittadina più grande con molte fabbriche e miniere di carbone. La popolazione attuale è di circa 25.000 abitanti.
C'è anche un teatro ed un cinema. Ci si può aspettare perfino un po' di divertimento. Siamo alloggiati con un gran numero di camerati ad un piano precedentemente svuotato.

Le giornate a Denain le passiamo facendo addestramento, adunate, pulizia delle armi, pulizia e rammendo delle uniformi nonché corsi di formazione.

18. März 1917

Weitermarsch über Inchy, Sains-les-Marquion, Marquion, Sauchy-Lestrée, Oisy-le Verger, Aubencheul-au Bac, Aubigny-au Bac, Fressies nach Fressain. Hier verbringen wir die Nacht mit ungefähr 20 Mann in einer Küche. Abends habe ich mich mit der Tochter der Hauses, einem hübschen jungen Mädchen, Victoire, prächtig unterhalten. Sie traktierte mich sogar mit Buttermilch.

We continue our march via Inchy, Sains-les-Marquion, Marquion, Sauchy-Lestrée, Oisy-le Verger, Aubencheul-au Bac, Aubigny-au Bac, Fressies to Fressain. Here we are spending the night in a kitchen together with approximately 20 people. In the evening i am having a wonderful conversation with their beautiful young daughter Victoire. She is even offering me some buttermilk.

Là nous passons la nuit à 20 hommes dans une cuisine. Le soir j’ai eu une très bonne conversation avec une jolie jeune fille, Victoire. Elle m’offre même du babeurre à boire.

Continuiamo la marcia via Inchy, Sains-les-Marquion, Marquion, Sauchy- Lestrée, Oisy-le-Verger, Aubencheul-au-Bac, Aubigny-au-Bac, Fressies fino a Fressain. Qui passiamo la notte in una cucina insieme ad altre venti persone. La sera ho avuto una conversazione molto bella con la loro bellissima e giovane figlia Victoire. Ella mi offre persino un po' di latticello.

17. März 1917

Abmarsch von Mory über Ecoust-St.Mein, Quéant nach Pronville. Da der uns zugewiesene Raum völlig belegt ist, schlafe ich die Nacht in einem Wandschrank.

Departure from Mory via Ecoust-St.Mein, Quéant to Pronville. As the assigned place is completely occupied i am spending the night in a closet.

Départ à pied de Mory via Ecoust-St.Mein, Quéant à Pronville. Comme l’espace qui nous est attribué est complètement occupé, je dors la nuit dans une armoire encastrée.

In marcia da Mory attraverso Ecoust-St. Mein, Quéant fino a Pronville. Dato che il posto che ci è stato assegnato è già completamente occupato, trascorro la notte in un armadio a muro.

10. März 1917

Abmarsch von Riencourt über Bullecourt, Ecoust-St.Mein nach Mory. Nun bin ich in Mory (Mori) und bin doch nicht zu Hause.

Es werden hier alle Vorbereitungen getroffen, um den geplanten Rückzug von der Ancre in die Tat umzusetzen.

Alle Fernsprechleitungen und Gestänge, die nach vorne verlaufen werden in der letzten Nacht umgelegt und zersägt, die Leitungsdrähte zerschnitten und die Isolierglocken zerschlagen.
Die Infanterie ist schon abgerückt. Nur noch einige Nachkommandos und Pioniere sind geblieben. Straßenkreuzungen werden unterminiert und in die Luft gesprengt. Rings Um uns gehen die Dörfer in Flammen auf; der gesamte Horizont ist blutrot. Ein schaurig-prächtiges Bild! Ebenso werden alle Brunnen in die Luft gesprengt und alle hohen Bäume gefällt. Die nachrückenden Engländer sollen eben nichts vorfinden. Erst vor wenigen Tagen sind die letzten Dorfbewohner abgerückt. Die armen Menschen haben alles zurücklassen müssen. Ihr Haus und ihre Wohnung werden sie nie wiederfinden.

Here everything is being prepared to put the planned withdrawal from the Ancre into effect.
All telephone lines and poles that lead to the front are cut down during the last night and sawn up into pieces, the wires cut up and the insulators smashed.
The infantry have already pulled out. Only a few rearguard detachments and pioneers (field engineers) have stayed on. Crossroads are mined and blown up. All around us, villages are going up in flames. The whole horizon is blood-red. A picture of terrible beauty! All the wells and water pumps are also blown up, and all tall trees are felled. The intention is that the advancing English should find nothing useful when they get here. The last villagers moved out just a few days ago. The poor people had to leave everything behind. They will never find their house and home again.

Tous les travaux nécessaires sont entrepris pour mettre en oeuvre le retrait programmé de l’Ancre. Toutes les lignes et tous les poteaux téléphoniques qui mènent vers l’avant sont abattus et sciés en petits morceaux pendant la dernière nuit, les fils découpés en petits morceaux et les godets isolateurs fracassés. L’infanterie s’est déjà repliée.
Il ne reste plus que quelques détachements d’arrière-garde et de pionniers. Les carrefours sont minés et on les fait sauter. Autour de nous les villages sont consumés par les flammes: tout l’horizon est rouge sang. Tableau d’une beauté terrible! On fait également sauter tous les points d’eau, et on abat tous les grands arbres. Les anglais qui avanceront ne trouveront rien d’utilisable. Les derniers villageois sont seulement partis quelques jours auparavant. Les pauvres gens ont dû tout laisser derrière eux. Ils ne retrouveront jamais leur maison ni leur foyer.

Tutti i lavori necessari sono intrapresi per realizzare il ritiro programmato della Ancre. Tutte le linee e tutti i pali del telefono che portano verso il fronte sono abbattuti e segati in piccoli pezzi durante l'ultima notte, i fili tagliati in piccoli pezzi e i gli isolatori a bicchiere fracassati. La fanteria si è già ritirata.
Non resta che qualche reparto di retro-guardia e di pionieri. Gli incroci sono minati e li si fa saltare. Attorno a noi i paesi sono distrutti dalle fiamme: tutto l'orizzonte è rosso sangue. Quadro di una bellezza terribile! Si fanno saltare allo stesso modo tutti i punti d'acqua e si abbattono tutti gli alberi alti. Gli inglesi che avanzeranno non troveranno niente di utilizzabile. Gli ultimi abitanti del paese sono partiti solo qualche giorno prima. La povera gente ha dovuto lasciare tutto dietro di sé. Non ritroveranno mai la loro casa, né il loro focolare.
