Über die Arbeit der Störtrupps - The work of the telephone-line repair detachments

Ernst Jünger gibt in seinem Buch "In Stahlgewittern" eine kurze Beschreibung zum Thema Störtrupps.

In his book "Storms of Steel" Ernst Jünger is giving a short description of the
work of the telephone-line repair detachments.

The work of the telephone-line repair detachments. Whenever the wire was cut by artillery fire, I had to have it fixed by my line-repairmen. In these men, whose work I had hardly noticed on the battlefield till now, I discovered a special kind of unknown worker of the field of death. Whereas everyone else generally got out of areas that were under fire as fast as they could, the line-repairmen made their way towards them quickly and professionally. Night and day, they sought out the shell-holes that were still warm from the explosions that had created them in order to tie two severed wire-ends together again; this work was as dangerous as it was unglamorous.

In addition to Google Maps, Google Street view will now be integrated into this blog. This will provide many new impressions of the local conditions, eventhough the landscape has changed throughout the war and many villages have been rebuild.

In case you find an interesting view that is related to Dieter´s diary, please feel free to sent the link via email or post it in the comment section.

On the occasion of the Kaiser’s birthday, our telephone detachment takes part in the parade in the fields around Vaulx. It is bitterly cold.

Fa terribilmente freddo.

Anmerkung/ Remark
www.buddecke.de presents two interesting pictures of the parade held in front of the Kaiser in Warshaw the very same day. They were taken by the german flight observer Lt. Spieler. (Thank you Roco for the link.)

22. Januar 1917

---

Anmerkung: Dieter wird bis zum 18. Februar in Vaulx verbleiben.

At last we are relieved by another party from our detachment. We make our way back via Bihucourt, Sapignies, Mory and Vraucourt to Vaulx, where we report to our detachment. The 18th Division [headquarters] is located there.
---
For the next while I am employed as an orderly in our telephone exchange. In addition, I occasionally go looking for breaks in the permanent lines; sometimes new permanent lines are established.
---

---

Grosses Hauptquartier, 12. Januar 1917.

Wilhelm I. R.

To the German nation!

Our enemies have dropped the mask. First, with derision and mendacious words of love of freedom and humanity, they rejected our honourable peace offer. In their reply to the United States they have now, beyond that, admitted to a craving for conquest whose ignominy is increased even more by its mendacious justification.
Their objective is the repression of Germany, the dismemberment of the powers allied with us and the subjugation of the freedom of Europe and the seas under the same yoke that Greece now bears with gritted teeth.
But what they could not achieve in thirty months of the bloodiest fighting and the most conscience-bereft economic war, they will also fail to accomplish in the future.
Our glorious victories and the iron will, with which our fighting nation has borne any hardship and adversity before the enemy and at home, guarantee that our beloved fatherland will continue to have nothing to fear.
Hell-burning resentment and sacred fury will double the force of every German man and woman, regardless of whether it is dedicated to fighting, labour or sacrifice-willing fortitude. God, who planted this wondrous spirit of freedom in our courageous nation's heart, will also give us and our loyal, storm-tested allies complete victory over all enemy lust for power and destructive rage.

Great Headquarters, 12 January 1917.

Wilhelm I. R.

Nasty fire on the front which occasionally increases to barrages.
