18. Februar 1917

Abmarsch der Abteilung von Vaulx über Lagnicourt, Quéant nach Riencourt. Hier beziehen wir Quartier in einer Holzbaracke, in der wir uns wieder die Betten selbst zimmern müssen. In den ersten Tagen habe ich mit an der Siegfried-Stellung geschanzt, die überall im Entstehen ist. Hier müssen wir angestrengt arbeiten. Meistens arbeiten wir im Akkord. Wer sein angewiesenes Grabenstück ausgehoben hat, kann abschwimmen. Außerdem arbeiten wir an Lauf- und Kabelgräben. Darauf muß ich einige Tage wegen einer Sehnenzerrung im Knie in der Baracke bleiben.

The detachment leaves Vaulx on the march via Lagnicourt and Quéant for Riencourt. Here we take up quarters in a wooden hut in which, once again, we have to construct wooden beds ourselves. In the first few days I do my bit for the construction of the Siegfried line, which is taking shape all around us. Here we really have to work hard. Most of the time we reach an agreement over the work: as soon as you have dug your allotted bit of trench, you can head off. We also work on digging communication trenches and trenches for telephone lines. For part of this period, I am excused duties and have to stay behind in quarters for a few days on account of tendinitis in my knee.

Départ du détachement de Vaulx via Lagnicourt, Quéant à Riencourt. Là nous prenons quartier dans une baraque en bois dans laquelle nous devons de nouveau fabriquer les lits nous-mêmes. Les premiers jours j’ai participé à la construction de la ligne Siegfried, qui prend forme partout autour de nous. Nous devons travailler dur. La plupart du temps, nous travaillons sur base d’une entente: celui qui a creusé son bout désigné de tranchée peut se barrer. Nous travaillons également sur des boyaux et des tranchées pour les lignes téléphoniques. Pendant cette période je dois rester plusieurs jours au baraquement à cause d’une tendinite au genou.

In questo periodo sono parzialmente esonerato dai miei compiti e me ne sto per qualche giorno dietro, agli alloggi, a causa di una tendinite al ginocchio.

Ernst Jünger gibt in seinem Buch "In Stahlgewittern" eine kurze Beschreibung zum Thema Störtrupps.

In his book "Storms of Steel" Ernst Jünger is giving a short description of the work of the telephone-line repair detachments.

Über die Arbeit der Störtrupps. War der Draht zerschossen, so mußte ich ihn durch meinen Störungstrupp flicken lassen. Ich entdeckte in diesen Leuten, deren Tätigkeit mir bisher im Kampfgelände kaum aufgefallen war, eine besondere Art von unbekannten Arbeitern im tödlichen Raum. Während jeder andere sich gemeinhin beeilte, den Zonen des Beschusses auszuweichen, strebte der Störtrupp unverzüglich und berufsmäßig auf sie zu. Bei Tag und Nacht suchte er die vom Einschlage noch warmen Trichter auf, um zwei Drahtenden wieder zusammenzuflechten; diese Tätigkeit war ebenso gefährlich wie unscheinbar.

The work of the telephone-line repair detachments. Whenever the wire was cut by artillery fire, I had to have it fixed by my line-repairmen. In these men, whose work I had hardly noticed on the battlefield till now, I discovered a special kind of unknown worker of the field of death. Whereas everyone else generally got out of areas that were under fire as fast as they could, the line-repairmen made their way towards them quickly and professionally. Night and day, they sought out the shell-holes that were still warm from the explosions that had created them in order to tie two severed wire-ends together again; this work was as dangerous as it was unglamorous.

Il lavoro del reparto telefonisti. Ovunque la linea fosse interrotta a causa del fuoco dell'artiglieria, bisognava ripararla con i miei colleghi addetti alle riparazioni. Tra questi uomini, il cui lavoro avevo a malapena intravisto fino ad allora sul campo di battaglia, io scoprii uno speciale tipo di sconosciuto lavoratore nel "campo della morte". Laddove chiunque, generalmente, scappava più in fretta che poteva dalle zone sotto il fuoco nemico, i telefonisti andavano avanti velocemente e con professionalità. Notte e giorno, essi sbucavano dalle buche di proiettili ancora calde per le esplosioni, per ricollegare i due capi di una linea ; questo lavoro era tanto pericoloso quanto spiacevole.

Anläßlich des Geburtstages des Kaisers nimmt auch unsere Fernsprechabteilung an der Paradeaufstellung auf den Feldern von Vaulx teil. Es ist schauderhaft kalt.

On the occasion of the Kaiser’s birthday, our telephone detachment takes part in the parade in the fields around Vaulx. It is bitterly cold.

A l’occasion de l’anniversaire de l’Empereur notre détachement téléphonique participe à la parade dans les champs autuour de Vaulx. Il fait un froid de canard.

In occasione della compleanno del Kaiser, il nostro reparto di telefonisti prende parte ad una parata vicino Vaulx. Fa terribilmente freddo.

22. Januar 1917

Endlich löst uns ein anderer Trupp unserer Abteilung ab. Wir gehen zurück über Bihucourt, Sapignies, Mory, Vraucourt nach Vaulx und melden uns dort bei unserer Abteilung zurück. Im Ort liegt die 18. Division.

Während der Folgezeit bin ich als Ordonnanz bei unserer Fernsprechstation tätig. Nebenbei gehe ich mitunter auf Störungssuche in den permanenten Leitungen; zuweilen werden auch solche gebaut.

Anmerkung: Dieter wird bis zum 18. Februar in Vaulx verbleiben.

At last we are relieved by another party from our detachment. We make our way back via Bihucourt, Sapignies, Mory and Vraucourt to Vaulx, where we report to our detachment. The 18th Division [headquarters] is located there.

For the next while I am employed as an orderly in our telephone exchange. In addition, I occasionally go looking for breaks in the permanent lines; sometimes new permanent lines are established.

Enfin un autre groupe de notre détachement prend la relève. Nous repartons via Bihucourt, Sapignies, Mory, Vraucourt jusqu‘à Vaulx et nous présentons au retour à notre détachement. La 18e Division se trouve là.

Schlacht an der Ancre im November 1916

Im Film Archive of the Imperial War Museum befindet sich ein Film über die Schlacht an der Ancre während der zweiten Phase der Offensive am 15. September. Insdesondere der 5 Teil zeigt eroberte Deutsche Stellungen und gibt somit einen guten Eindruck über die Situation an der Front zu dieser Zeit. Die Schlacht an der Ancre war die abschließende Aktion der Schlacht an der Somme 1916 und wurde am 13. November 1916 durch die 5. British Army gestartet.

The Film Archive of the Imperial War Museum contains a film film covering the Battle at the Ancre during its second phase of the offensive 15th september, Especially the 5th part shows captured german positions and is giving good insights of the situation at the front at that time. The Battle of the Ancre was the final act of the 1916 Battle of the Somme. Launched on 13 November 1916 by the British Fifth Army.

L'Archivio Cinematografico del Museo Imperiale della Guerra contiene un film sulla Battaglia dell´ Ancre (English only) nella seconda fase dell'offensiva del 15 settembre. In particolare, la 5^ parte mostra le posizioni conquistate ai tedeschi e ci dà un'utile informazione sulla situazione al fronte in quel periodo. La Battaglia dell'Ancre fu l'atto finale della Battaglia della Somme del 1916, lanciata il 13 novembre 1916 dalla Quinta Armata Inglese.
