Sonntag.

Sunday. In the afternoon we go on an exhausting walk on paths deep with snow to the Hermannsdenkmal in the Teutoburg Forest. On the way down we slipped and fell a great deal. We drink coffee in the "Thusnelda" café.

Explanation for non-German readers.
The Hermannsdenkmal was completed in 1875 to commemorate the victory of Arminius (Hermann)over the Romans in 9 A.D. The original impulse was to celebrate German unity, but this was appropriated in the 1920s by right-wing extremists to glorify German military power. It was a motif used by the NSDAP and became known throughout Germany and much-photographed and visited. The democratic parties tried to resist and associate the monument with values like unity and freedom, but they were overwhelmed. A classic outing for anyone visiting the area at this time.
