Die Regimentschronik gibt eine sehr gute Beschreibung der Situation an der Ancre. Ein Auszug soll an dieser Stelle zusammen mit originalen Bildern dargestellt werden. Viele Einzelheiten dieser Beschreibung finden sich bei Dieter ebenso wieder.
[…] Die Fahrt ging an die Ancre, einem Nebenflüßchen der Somme, am äußersten rechten Flügel der Einbruchstelle. Während auf den übrigen Teilen des Sommefeldes im November die Front zu erstarren begann, brodelte es hier in diesem Monat noch weiter. Am 13. November hatte der Engländer durch die Einnahme von Beaumont-Hamel einen größeren Erfolg erzielt, der ihn voraussichtlich zu weiterem vorgehen gegen sein nächstes Ziel, die Stadt Baupaume, ermutigen würde.[…] Der Marsch in die Stellungen wird allen 86ern unvergesslich bleiben. 
Our journey continued to the Ancre, a small tributary of the Somme, on the extreme right wing of the salent. Whereas the front had begun to stabilise in the rest of the Somme area by November, here things continued to simmer throughout November. On 13 November the English had achieved a rather significant success in taking Beaumont-Hamel, which could be expected to encourage them to take further steps to seize their next objective, the town of Bapaume. […] The move into our positions will remain forever in the memory of all the men of the 86th.
La nostra avventura continua sull'Ancre, un piccolo affluente della Somme, all'estrema ala destra del saliente. Mentre il fronte aveva cominciato a stabilizzarsi, qui invece la situazione cominciava lentamente a ribollire. Il 13 novembre gli Inglesi avevano ottenuto un successo significativo con la conquista di Beaumont-Hamel, cosa che ci si aspettava potesse incoraggiarli a compiere ulteriori passi per la conquista del prossimo obiettivo, la città di Bapaume. einziger blieb der Bahndamm. Auch er bot nicht geringe Schwierigkeiten, denn er war oft getroffen, Schwellen und Gleise hingen in der Luft. In dem völlig zertrümmerten Miraumont entspring mit starker Quelle die Ancre und fließt in einem breiten baumbestandenen Wiesenthal der Somme zu. Hier wurde der Bahndamm verlassen. Es ging am steilen Hange des Ancretales entlang auf Grandcourt zu. There was no footing on any of the approach routes, even the paved routes had been pulverised by artillery fire. The only route was the railway embankment. Even it presented considerable difficulties, as it had taken many hits, so that sleepers and rails were hanging in the air. In Miraumont, which was reduced to ruins, the Ancre had burst its banks and flowed copiously into a broad, partly forested flood plain of the Somme. Here we left the railway embankment. The way to Grandcourt led down a steep slope alongside the Ancre. Non c'era alcuna stabilità su nessuna delle strade di avvicinamento, anche le strade lastricate erano state polverizzate dal tiro dell'artiglieria. L'unica strada restava l'argine della ferrovia. C'erano comunque grosse difficoltà, dato che questa era stata già colpita varie volte, e le traversine e le rotaie stavano lì contorte al vento. A Miraumont, ridotta in macerie, l'Ancre aveva rotto gli argini e fluiva copioso in una larga, alberata piana della Somme, parzialmente allagata. Qui lasciammo l'argine della ferrovia. ht hilfsbereite Kameraden, oft unter grimmigen Witzen sie herausgezogen hätten. Es wurde erzählt, dass vom abgelösten Regiment mehrere Ordonnanzen und Melder in den trügerischen Trichtern ertrunken wären. Weiter watete man durch das ganz zusammengeschossene Grandcourt zur Stellung, die auf den Höhen davor lag. Etwas trostloseres hatten die Füsiliere noch nicht gesehen. Weit und breit kein Halm, kein Baum, kein Strauch, eine Wüste von graubraunem Lehm dehnte sich vor ihren Augen. The approach route became increasingly difficult. The highway to Grandcourt was covered by a fine, foot-deep layer of slush, beneath which the shell-holes were completely invisible. The leading companies had equipped themselves with long staffs and felt their way carefully forward, step by step. Many men who were not so equipped went into shell-holes waist- or chest-deep and would have drowned were it not for comrades who were willing to drag them out, often with black-humoured jokes. We heard that several orderlies and runners from the regiment that we relieved had drowned in the treacherous shell-holes. We waded on through the completely shot-up Grandcourt to the position, which was on the heights above the town. The fusiliers had never seen such desolation. Far and wide around there was not a blade of grass, a tree, a bush: a desert of grey-brown mud extended before our eyes. Procedere in avanti diventava sempre più difficile. Abbiamo saputo che alcune ordinanze (attendenti) e portaordini del reggimento cui avevamo dato il cambio erano annegati nelle pericolosissime buche dei proiettili d'artiglieria. A fatica passammo attraverso Grandcourt, completamente distrutta, fino alla nuova posizione sulle alture intorno alla cittadina. Mai i fucilieri avevano visto una tale desolazione. Tutto intorno non c'era più un filo d'erba, un albero, un cespuglio: un deserto di fango grigio e marrone si stendeva davanti ai nostri occhi.
Die „Stellung“ verdiente nicht den Namen einer solchen. Sie bestand streckenweise nur aus einer reihe von Trichtern, die durch eine etwa dreiviertel Meter tiefe Rinne verbunden waren. Knietief war sie mit Schlamm erfüllt. Der größte Teil war überhaupt nicht mehr als Stellung erkennbar. Die Posten standen in notdürftig gereinigten Granattrichtern. Das Drahtverhau bestand aus 1-2 Reihen Schnellhindernis. Vielfach zerschossen, war es also so gut wie nicht da. Einige Unterstände, alte Artillerieunterstände, waren allerdings vorhanden. Jedoch waren sie undicht und verschlammt. Die Leute konnten nur sitzend darin ruhen. Ganz besonders niederdrückend war der Mangel an Beleuchtung. Tagelang saßen sie Füsiliere im Dunkeln. Erst die eindringlichen Vorstellungen des Regiments brachten zuwege, dass hier Abhilfe geschaffen ward. The ‘position’ was nothing worthy of the name. In places it was no more than a row of shell-holes connected by a ditch about three-quarters of a metre (two feet) deep. It was knee-deep in mud. Most of it was not even recognisable as a position any more. Sentries stood in shell-holes that had been tidied up to the extent possible. The barbed-wire defence was no more than one or two rows of concertina wire. Blown to pieces in many places, it was as good as useless. There were a few dugouts, old artillery positions. However they were not waterproof and were muddy. The men could only rest in them sitting [not lying] down. The lack of light made them particularly depressing. The fusiliers sat in the dark for days on end. This situation was only put right after insistent representations had been made by the regiment. La "posizione" non era neanche degna di questo nome. Non era che una fila di buche di proiettili collegata da un fosso profondo un tre quarti di metro. Si affondava fino alle ginocchia. Per la maggior parte non era più nemmeno riconoscibile come una posizione. Le sentinelle stavano nelle buche riparate alla meglio. I reticolati non erano che una o due linee di filo spinato. Fatto a pezzi in più parti, era praticamente inutile. C'erano alcuni ricoveri sotterranei, vecchie posizioni di artiglieria. In ogni caso, non erano impermeabilizzati ma pieni di fango. gli uomini potevano solo starci dentro seduti. La mancanza di luce ci rendeva particolarmente tristi. I fucilieri sedevano al buio per giorni. La situazione fu raddrizzata solo dopo molte lamentele portate avanti dal reggimento.
