A squad moves up to take over communications station Mars in Marlemperche.

---

At Marlemperche I do quite a comfortable service in a good station. Quarters are good and provisions are excellent. Only once, we do build a communications line to the front. But soon the german retreat is to continue.

I am still in the spoon factory, this gruesome prison. In the afternoon we get transported as a group to the station. In the evening, a train takes me to Sains du Nord. Here, I stay for the night.

21. Oktober 1918

Together with all other soldiers that are accommodated here, I move over to the Spoon factory. All factory buildings are surrounded with barbed wire, and guards with rifles prevent anyone to get out. So we practically are imprisoned. Imagine, german soldiers are guarded by Germans! This is how far we got, to employ such measures for keeping together travelling or scattered soldiers.

Well, unfortunately one must admit that almost more people run around in the back area than on the front-line. During the night, Hirson is attacked five times by aeroplanes. One bomb comes down in a court 50 metres from our quarters.

FRA
